Josiah Hickman is a second-year student at the University of Southern California, enrolled in a four-year dual Bachelor’s and Master’s program in Astronautical Engineering. On track to graduate early with his Master’s degree, Josiah is a driven innovator passionate about advancing humanity’s capabilities in space exploration through autonomous systems and groundbreaking technologies. During his time at USC, Josiah has made significant contributions to high-impact projects, including his work at the Liquid Propulsion Lab, where he designed and machined a thrust vector control system for a liquid rocket engine. He has also participated in robotics research, developing CAN communication protocols for extraterrestrial robotic systems. These experiences reflect his technical expertise in guidance, navigation, and control (GNC), a field he is passionate about for its role in enabling precise spacecraft operations. Beyond his academic pursuits, Josiah is dedicated to inspiring the next generation of engineers. As part of the Google X AI Community Outreach Program, he has designed and led workshops introducing K-12 students in underserved communities to AI, robotics, and aerospace engineering. By sharing his journey and knowledge, Josiah empowers students from diverse backgrounds to envision themselves as innovators in fields where they are often underrepresented. Josiah’s ultimate goal is to establish an autonomous space robotics company that pioneers solutions for planetary exploration and Earth-based challenges like disaster response and infrastructure repair. He envisions a future where space travel, exploration, and technologies like asteroid mining become integral to human progress. With a relentless curiosity and a vision for a more inclusive aerospace industry, Josiah strives to leave a lasting impact, inspiring others to explore the infinite possibilities of the cosmos.
